Scanty

Scanty is not Mickey's first success in the fashion world, but merely the newest incarnation of his creative energies. His career in the clothing business has lasted almost 30 years to date and started with a broom in his hand. A self-taught designer, Sills has always used his sharp eye for lifestyle trends and knowledge of vintage Americana to create garments that feel like the past, but speak to the present.

A health crisis in 2004 was the catalyst that lead Mickey to rethink his initial strategy for Scanty. He knew that it had the potential but he realized that in order to bring Scanty to the level of success that he knew it could reach, he would have to make some changes and allow someone in to handle the business aspect of the brand. SBH Intimates, an industry leader in intimate apparel and loungewear was the company that would allow him to utilize all of his creative energy and direct it to the image and the design of the brand, while freeing him from the day to day business aspects of the industry.

The marriage between the two created the new formula for Scanty's success. Once Mickey was certain that SBH Intimates could provide the financial support and business tools to help Scanty become everything that he knew in his heart it could, he then recruited Julie Zipperer, the third and final piece of the Scanty pie. He chooses to nurture an environment conducive to allowing the flow of creative juices. Sills formulates all of his unique designs out of a little house in his backyard decorated with inspirational shots of nostalgic materials like airstreams, kitschy, retro Hawaiian knickknacks and classic movie posters, just to name a few. Unlike other creative geniuses, he even allows people to come to his house and hang out in their pj's because he wants everyone to "have fun in their pj's all the time." (although, Hugh Hefner he's not) Scanty is Mickey's answer to the soccer mom that wants to be fashionable, but comfortable when running out for errands or picking up the kids from school.

Sills is an avid Harley Davidson enthusiast and a product of the California culture that was his upbringing. This Long Beach, Long Island kid turned Southern Californian has used his street smarts and tenacity to quietly make a name for himself in the fashion community. Mickey is not big on people as influences, but finds inspiration everywhere, whether it's classic films, cars, fashion, art, music or just everyday life----he finds beauty and inspiration in it all.
